He wants her to marry him and live with him in Buenos Aires, and she has already agreed to leave with him in secret.

After that, the two lovers met clandestinely. As Eveline reviews her decision to embark on a new life, she holds in her lap two letters, one to her father and one to her brother Harry.

She begins to favor the sunnier memories of her old family life, when her mother was alive and her brother was living at home, and notes that she did promise her mother to dedicate herself to maintaining the home.

She reasons that her life at home, cleaning and cooking, is hard but perhaps not the worst option—her father is not always mean, after all. At the docks in Dublin, Eveline waits in a crowd to board the ship with Frank.

She appears detached and worried, overwhelmed by the images around her, and prays to God for direction.

Her previous declaration of intent seems to have never happened. When the boat whistle blows and Frank pulls on her hand to lead her with him, Eveline resists.

She clutches the barrier as Frank is swept into the throng moving toward the ship. Hers is the first portrait of a female in Dubliners , and it reflects the conflicting pull many women in early twentieth-century Dublin felt between a domestic life rooted in the past and the possibility of a new married life abroad.

One moment, Eveline feels happy to leave her hard life, yet at the next moment she worries about fulfilling promises to her dead mother. She clings to the older and more pleasant memories and imagines what other people want her to do or will do for her.

She sees Frank as a rescuer, saving her from her domestic situation. Eveline suspends herself between the call of home and the past and the call of new experiences and the future, unable to make a decision.

Eveline , a nineteen-year-old woman in Dublin, is sitting with her head against the curtains, watching dusk fall on her street.

There is hardly anyone outside, but she notices a man who lives in the last house walking home. She hears his footsteps change from the concrete to the cinder path as he enters the newer part of the street that is filled with red houses, instead of brown ones like hers.

She remembers that there used to be a field here where she would play with the neighborhood children and her siblings, except for Ernest , because he was already too old.

Joyce begins by bringing in the symbol of dust almost immediately. As she watches her neighbor enter the newer part of the neighborhood, she becomes nostalgic and remembers her childhood, when there used to be a field instead of new red houses.

Active Themes. Paralysis and Inaction. Eveline reflects back on her childhood, realizing that she was happier back then when her father was less violent and her mother was still alive.

But now she and her siblings are all grown up, and her mother is dead along with her neighbor Tizzie Dunn. The Waters have moved back to England.

Eveline continues to think nostalgically back on her past, and now she brings up literal death, as she lists off those who have died. Her lack of emotion when talking about death emphasizes the fact that Eveline herself is not really living, and so death is not only familiar, but signifies less of a loss.

Related Quotes with Explanations. Eveline is suddenly overcome with nostalgia as she looks around at the objects that she has dusted over the years.

She wonders where the dust comes from, and then realizes she may never see these objects again. She realizes she still does not even know the name of the priest whose photo is hanging on the wall, along with a broken harmonium and a colored print of promises made to Blessed Margaret Mary Alacoque a French Catholic saint.

The symbol of dust comes back and continues to inspire nostalgia in Eveline, since she has spent much of her life dusting. Eveline is starting to question her decision to leave more and more.

In Dublin she has shelter and food, and she is surrounded by the same familiar people she has known her whole life.

She imagines that her coworkers at the Stores, the shop where she works, will say she is a fool when they learn she has run away with a man.

Eveline imagines Miss Gavan , the owner, will be glad that she is gone, since she always seemed to be especially critical of Eveline.

She decides she is not sad to leave work, and that once she is married and living in her new home in an unknown land she will have the respect of her peers.

Eveline allows her nostalgia to distract her from the harsh reality of her present life in Dublin, and her escape suddenly loses its appeal. Since she is a woman, however, she knows she must find a husband if she wants to gain respect or have any real agency in society.

Escapism and the Exotic. Now that Eveline is over nineteen and none of her siblings are there to protect her, her father has begun to threaten her more.

As a result, she has begun to suffer from heart palpitations.

She sees Frank as a rescuer, saving her from her domestic situation. Eveline suspends herself between the call of home and the past and the call of new experiences and the future, unable to make a decision.

On the docks with Frank, away from the familiarity of home, Eveline seeks guidance in the routine habit of prayer. She will keep her lips moving in the safe practice of repetitive prayer rather than join her love on a new and different path.

Though Eveline fears that Frank will drown her in their new life, her reliance on everyday rituals is what causes Eveline to freeze and not follow Frank onto the ship.

The story does not suggest that Eveline placidly returns home and continues her life, but shows her transformation into an automaton that lacks expression.

Eveline, the story suggests, will hover in mindless repetition, on her own, in Dublin. On the docks with Frank, the possibility of living a fully realized life left her.

As a result, she has begun to suffer from heart palpitations. Ernest is dead and Harry another brother is usually away for business.

Eveline is beginning to grow tired of fighting about money with her father as well. She gives him all of her wages, but he never gives her any money to spend because he thinks she will waste it.

In addition to keeping the house together, she also cares for two children who have been left in her charge. The role of women in her society has greatly influenced Eveline, and led her to justify risking her health in order to fulfill her duties.

A young woman, Eveline, of about nineteen years of age sits by her window, waiting to leave home. She muses on the aspects of her life that are driving her away, while "in her nostrils was the odor of dusty cretonne ".

Her mother has died as has her older brother Ernest. Her remaining brother, Harry, is on the road "in the church decorating business".

She fears that her father will beat her as he used to beat her brothers and she has little loyalty for her sales job.

She has fallen for a sailor named Frank who promises to take her with him to Buenos Aires. Before leaving to meet Frank, she hears an organ grinder outside, which reminds her of a melody that played on an organ on the day her mother died and the promise she made to her mother to look after the home.
